When someone asks you, "What do you want to do with your life?" — can you answer? Now that AI is getting smarter every day, thinking about how you want to live is more important than ever. A book that can help you think through that question is "How Do You Live?" (Genzaburo Yoshino, 1937).
When I talk with young people lately, I often hear "I'm not sure what the future holds" or "I'm just doing my job for now." There's nothing wrong with that — but in an age where AI is taking over many tasks, having your own sense of "why I work" and "what I live for" becomes a powerful advantage.
AI can "work efficiently." But "how I want to live" is something only you can decide. Only the people who have that answer can truly make use of AI.
Recently, through work, I met a handful of young people. They were all serious, hardworking. But when I asked "What do you want to do with your future?" the answers came back: "I'm not really sure," or "I'm just kind of doing my current job for now."
They probably never had the experience, the trigger, or the method for thinking about how to live their future. Had they ever sat with someone and really talked through that question? Had anyone ever taught them how to think about it?
"Do you read books?" I asked. "Hardly ever," they said. So I recommended a book that has also been made into a film: "How Do You Live?" (1937, Genzaburo Yoshino).
We live in the age of generative AI. Information arrives in an instant; text and images are created by AI. It can look like "how to be more efficient" is the right answer. But — there is something AI cannot replace. That is the question: "How do I want to live?" The sense of purpose and the passion that arise from it.
When you have purpose, thinking about how to use AI naturally follows. When you have passion, the will to make the most of AI as a tool comes with it.
"How Do You Live?" is not a book of answers — it is a book of questions. I reread it and mapped out what each chapter is really asking, from multiple angles: neuroscience, psychology, behavioral economics, and sociology.
The structure of questions by chapter (excerpt):
1. A Strange Experience: How do my thoughts and actions arise? (Self and introspection)
2. A Brave Friend: What does it mean not to abandon your peers? What is courage?
3. Newton's Apple and Powdered Milk: What does it mean to know? Does learning have meaning?
4. A Poor Friend: Can you think of poverty as your own concern?
5. Napoleon and Four Boys: What is true strength? What is leadership?
Precisely because of the age of AI, those who carry a sense of purpose and passion — and use AI as the tool that supports that — are the ones who will open up the future.
How do you — how do I — want to live?
"How Do You Live?" (Genzaburo Yoshino, 1937) has not aged in nearly 90 years. The reason is that the book offers not answers but the structure of questions. From the perspective of Frankl's logotherapy, the core of human existence is not the will to pleasure or power but the will to meaning — and Yoshino's questioning takes the form of delegating that search for meaning to the reader themselves.
Reread in a contemporary context, the questions in each chapter permit translation into cognitive science and social psychology. The discontinuity of the self in the "Strange Experience" chapter maps onto the self-referential processing of the default mode network (DMN). The "true leadership" problem in the "Napoleon and Four Boys" chapter can be read against Bandura's vicarious reinforcement in social learning theory. From a behavioral economics angle, Koperu-kun's effort to take the situation of his poor friend as his own concern anticipates the problem of empathy tax — the cognitive and emotional cost of sustained perspective-taking.
In the labor economics context of the generative AI era, routine cognitive tasks are being automated (automation bias, ACES models). The remaining human advantage concentrates in non-routine creative and social tasks. At the core of this is what Frankl calls the will to meaning — the continuing capacity to ask for what purpose and toward what end one acts. Purpose is not merely a motivational factor; it functions as a metacognitive structure that determines the allocation of cognitive resources. Whether one can make maximum use of AI as a tool is directly proportional to the clarity of that purpose.
The framework of questions Yoshino built in 1937 connects, without design, directly to the questions of the 21st century. The faster technology accelerates, the higher the value density of the question "what does it mean to be human" becomes.
