Dignity Matrix

Dignity MatrixInner × Outer · Twelve Stages

Robert Kegan · Kristin Neff · Martin Buber
A framework that visualises the current locus of dignity at the intersection of an Inner level (the depth of dialogue with oneself) and an Outer level (the depth of one's recognition of the other).
An original model integrating the theories of Robert Kegan, Kristin Neff and Martin Buber.

What is dignity? An original framework integrating Kegan, Neff and Buber, organising twelve stages along the two axes of Inner and Outer. Published as the first article in /thinking.

v5 update: the philosophical separation of Dignity A (existence value) and Dignity B (developmental capacity); a premise declaration (the score is not an evaluation of worth); the scope of acceptance and the three boundary variables made explicit; the complementarity of structural and relational approaches.

The score is not an evaluation of your worth as a person.

What this framework measures is a map of current recognition patterns — not your existence value as such.

A map does not negate the terrain. A map says "you are here" — not "you should not be here."

Your value as a person is absolute, irrespective of this score.

00 — Framework Premise
Framework Premise
Two Senses of Dignity · Scope of Acceptance

"Dignity" actually means two different things. This framework only measures one of them.

Dignity has two distinct senses. This framework measures only one of them (Dignity B).

The conceptual bifurcation of dignity. This framework explicitly separates Dignity into an ontological dimension (A) and a developmental dimension (B). The former is presupposed as a Kantian absolute value and placed outside the scope of measurement. Only the latter is measured.

Dignity A
Existence value (absolute, non-rankable)

Every person has worth just by being born. It has nothing to do with grades or achievements. This framework does not try to measure that worth — it treats it as something that already exists.

Every person carries inherent worth from birth. This value does not increase or decrease by score, is incomparable, and holds without condition. The framework takes Dignity A as a given — it is not a measurement target.

Dignity A maps onto Kant's "dignity of persons" — the value underlying the categorical imperative by which each person in the kingdom of ends is treated as an end, never merely as a means. Because it is incomparable and unconditional, any attempt to variabilise it produces a conceptual contradiction. This model axiomatises it and places it outside the measurement system entirely.

Dignity B
Developmental capacity (mappable)

This is the ability to actually treat yourself and others with care — and it can grow through experience. This is what the framework measures. Think of it like finding your location on a map.

The depth to which one can recognise the consent and irreversibility of the other. How fully the awareness that both self and other carry dignity is reflected in daily behaviour — this is what the Inner × Outer axes map.

Dignity B is roughly equivalent to the Subject-Object transformation process in Kegan's constructive-developmental theory — operationalisable as "the depth of differentiation and integration of recognition patterns." The Inner axis maps onto the developmental trajectory of Neff's three self-compassion components (self-kindness, common humanity, mindfulness); the Outer axis reads as the I-It to I-Thou transition in Buber. The intersection of both axes constitutes the current coordinate of Dignity B.

The score from this framework only shows where you currently are on Dignity B — the ability that can grow. It says nothing at all about your worth as a person (Dignity A).

The Dignity Matrix score locates your current position on Dignity B. It does not — and need not — reach Dignity A.

The score is no more than an estimate of the current coordinate within Dignity B space. Contact with Dignity A is structurally impossible — it is placed outside the measurement system by design. This non-contact is not a bug; it is an architectural necessity.

What this framework accepts

This framework does not reject any feeling. Hating yourself, resenting someone, wanting to disappear — having those feelings is not the problem. It simply receives the fact that you are where you are right now. Feelings and actions are different things.

All inner states fall within the scope of acceptance. Negative thoughts, low self-esteem, trauma, impulses to exclude others, anger, jealousy — these are not targets for diagnosis, evaluation, or correction. They are received as the fact that "this person is here."

The framing: "they have simply not yet met the environment or the people that would prompt a shift." The state is not fixed. Current position is not a deficit.

The acceptance principle is structurally analogous to Rogers's Unconditional Positive Regard — but because this model operates in a diagnostic rather than therapeutic context, "acceptance" functions not as a precondition for therapeutic intervention but as a neutrality condition for description. Treating inner states as fluid current coordinates rather than fixed traits avoids the pathologising move of "current position equals deficit."

What falls outside acceptance — the three boundary variables

All feelings are accepted — but actions have limits. There are exactly three situations that fall outside what this framework accepts. Feelings and actions are treated as entirely separate things.

Only acts that satisfy at least one of the following conditions fall outside the scope of acceptance. Thoughts and acts are treated as distinct.

The three boundary variables are designed as the minimal set of ethical constraints. Consent capacity, locus of pleasure, and irreversibility — these three axes define "act non-acceptance" in a minimal, explicit way. Broadening beyond this risks sliding into over-intervention: the correction of thought itself.

  1. 合意能力のない他者への侵害(幼児・意識不明・強制下など、合意が原理的に不可能な状況での侵害)Violation of those without the capacity for consent (infants, the unconscious, situations of coercion — contexts in which consent is structurally impossible).
Acts in which the other's suffering, helplessness, or violation itself is the source of pleasure.
Irreversible harm (to life, body, or anything beyond recovery).

"Thinking about hurting someone" and "actually hurting someone" are completely different things. The thought is accepted as is. Only actions that match the three conditions above fall outside the boundary. Lv.-3 "Dignity Collapse" is about actions, not thoughts.

"Holding the thought of wanting to exclude someone" and "actually enacting that exclusion" are not treated as equivalent. The former is received within Dignity A; only the latter crosses the line. Lv.-3 "Dignity Collapse" refers to a state of acts, not a state of thoughts.

The thought-act separation takes a position distinct from Sartrean self-definition through acts. In this model, inner states (thoughts, impulses, feelings) do not in themselves affect the Dignity B score. The score is based on observation of behavioural patterns. Lv.-3 therefore designates not "a state of holding violent thoughts" but "a state in which acts that cross the boundary are repeated." This distinction underwrites the internal logic of the premise declaration that "the score is not an evaluation."

On Perceived Acceptance

When you feel accepted by someone, your score can look higher than it really is. For example, you naturally become kinder when you're with someone you love. That feeling of safety might be doing the work, not your actual ability.

That's why, when reading a score, this framework adds a note: "Is this result coming from a place where you feel protected by someone you care about?"

The sense that "I am accepted" can apparently raise the dignity score.

For example, within a securely attached relationship, even an I3-level inner state can produce behaviour patterns resembling O5-level recognition, through the felt sense of being accepted.

For this reason, perceived acceptance is treated not as a diagnostic variable but as an interpretive layer. When reading a score, one adds the context that "this result may be influenced by perceived acceptance."

Perceived acceptance is structurally close to the safe-base effect in attachment theory (Bowlby / Ainsworth). The external emotional-regulation resource provided by a secure base can introduce an upward bias in the internal Dignity B score. This is not measurement error but legitimate context-dependent variation — yet treating it as a diagnostic variable produces only the trivial result that "the score varies with the presence or absence of attachment relationships." It is therefore positioned as an interpretive layer: a contextual annotation, not a variable in the scoring model.

01 — Dignity Levels
Dignity Level Definitions
Lv.−3 to Lv.8 · Twelve Stages

Dignity has 12 stages, from minus 3 to 8. Lower numbers mean "negating both yourself and others." Higher numbers mean "naturally caring for both yourself and others without effort." Use this as a map to find roughly where you are right now. Click any card for details.

The twelve stages should be understood not as a simple linear sequence but as a discrete approximation of iso-dignity contours in a two-dimensional Inner × Outer coordinate space. The diagonal (I=O) represents the most balanced developmental trajectory; coordinates with large divergence indicate structurally unstable states. Click any card to reveal the human portrait, state and direction of growth for that coordinate.

02 — Scales
Inner & Outer Scale Definitions
Inner Scale I0–I7 · Outer Scale O0–O7

There are two axes that make up your score. "Inner" is how deeply you can face yourself. "Outer" is how deeply you can see others. Each runs from 0 to 7 — the higher the number, the deeper the level. Click any card for details.

Both scales are designed as independent developmental axes and do not presuppose correlation. The Inner axis (I) is a developmental reinterpretation of Neff's self-compassion theory, readable as the transition from I0 (extreme over-identification) to I7 (ontological affirmation). The Outer axis (O) joins Buber's relational philosophy (I-It / I-Thou) with Kegan's stage theory, structured as the transition from O0 (negation of the other) to O7 (social integration). Click any scale item to reveal the theoretical basis for that coordinate.

The diagonal (Inner = Outer) marks the most balanced state. Combinations where Outer exceeds Inner by 2 or more are structurally implausible and therefore hidden.

The matrix is designed as a subset of the direct product space of Inner × Outer. The hidden region where "Outer exceeds Inner by 2 or more" excludes structurally contradictory cells — the non-reality of a state in which one can acknowledge another's dignity but not one's own. Click any cell to see the human portrait, state and direction of growth for that coordinate. The diagonal (I=O) is the minimal-divergence trajectory of development, and clinically the most frequently observed distribution.

Kegan · Neff · Buber

This framework is built by combining the ideas of three researchers and thinkers. Kegan studied how humans grow; Neff studied how we can be kind to ourselves; Buber studied how we see others. This framework brings all three together into one map.

The theoretical architecture of this framework is designed as a three-body problem of constructive-developmental theory (Kegan), self-compassion theory (Neff), and dialogical ontology (Buber). Kegan supplies the staged structure of development; Neff provides the descriptive vocabulary for emotional transformation on the Inner axis; Buber provides the ontological foundation of the Outer axis. In integrating the three theories, they are selectively joined with awareness of each one's reach and limits. The references below are the theoretical substrate.

* This framework does not copy these ideas directly. It is an original model that rearranges and combines them under the theme of "dignity."

* The Dignity Matrix is an original model that draws on and reconstructs these theories. It is not a faithful reproduction of each theory but an independent integration and extension under the themes of dignity awareness and mutual recognition.

* This framework is a selective integration that consciously reckons with the differences in reach between theories. Kegan's stage theory presupposes the irreversibility of development; this model relaxes that assumption and permits situationally dependent coordinate variation. Neff's three components are measured as mutually independent constructs, but this model integrates them into the Inner axis by assuming a developmental ordering. Buber's I-Thou is described as an arrival state, but this model stages it as a continuous deepening from O4 onward. These transformations are methodological decisions, made with full awareness that they represent departures from the source theories.
