In the Age of AI, Only Those Who Move People Will Survive

From being used to using — the future is always made by people.
読み方Mode

AI is advancing rapidly, and many jobs are now being done by AI. So what should humans do? The answer is "move people." AI still cannot motivate others, bring a team together, or make decisions without precedent.

Work that is "just doing what you're told" is entering an age where AI handles it. But work that involves "thinking for yourself, moving people, and creating something new" is something only humans can do. That is why building those capabilities matters.

Those who use AI as a "tool" will lead the coming era. Not someone who waits for instructions — but someone who has their own vision and moves people. That is the path to surviving the age of AI.

AI's evolution shows no sign of stopping. And the nature of work is about to change dramatically.

Work that only does what it's told no longer has value. Data aggregation, manual operations, simple administrative processing — AI handles all of it accurately, quickly, and without rest. Work that is done to you is fated to disappear.

AI is relentlessly efficient with passive work. Expense reimbursement, contract review, inquiry response — and not just operators and clerical staff, but even knowledge-intensive work like data analysis, marketing research, and financial reporting is now something AI can handle faster and more accurately.

Still, AI has limits. It can derive the optimal solution from data, but it cannot make decisions without precedent. Creating new value the market doesn't yet have, and raising the morale of an organization — these are things AI is not good at.

Netflix's streaming business, Apple's iPhone, Tesla's electric vehicles. None of these were extensions of data analysis — all were products of vision and decision. What AI can do is trace past success stories. The future is always made by humans.

There is no future for a person who only waits for instructions. What is required is the ability to wield AI and generate new value. Toward the side that makes decisions, toward the side that moves projects, toward the side that creates the future. Becoming not the one who is used but the one who uses — that is the path to surviving the age of AI.

In the context of labor economics, as the Routine-Biased Technological Change (RBTC) model (Autor, Levy & Murnane, 2003) shows, cognitive and manual routine tasks are most vulnerable to automation pressure. Generative AI is extending this wave of automation into some non-routine cognitive tasks as well — at a speed that exceeds prior predictions. But the ability to "move people" (social intelligence) remains a continuing comparative advantage for humans. This is also a contemporary update of the proposition Drucker argued in Management (1974): "self-management and contribution to others in order to achieve results."

The corporate examples (Netflix, Apple, Tesla) as "products of vision and decision" can be understood, from a governance theory perspective, as problems of decision-making under uncertainty. In the domain of Knightian uncertainty — risk for which no probability distribution can be described — AI's pattern recognition is fundamentally unable to function. The reason is that AI learns from past data, but truly innovative decisions create categories that did not previously exist. This corresponds to Schumpeter's proposition that "creative destruction" always originates in human entrepreneurship.

Breaking down the ability to "move people" in neuroscientific terms, a three-layer structure emerges: empathic understanding grounded in the mirror neuron system, the workings of Theory of Mind, and emotional contagion. None of these are implemented in current LLM architectures — LLMs learn statistical patterns of natural language but do not have subjective experience (qualia) and do not generate genuine understanding of others. "Moving people" is the exercise of a distinctly human capacity with this biological substrate, and it sits at the core of human irreplaceability in the age of AI.
